The Power of a Personal Testimony
For almost 25 years, starting at age 16, I worked with an amazing retreat team that focused on personal testimonies to relay the Gospel. An attractive teen boy proclaimed the challenges and benefits of trusting in God’s plan for romantic relationships. An older woman admitted that she turned away from God as a teen, and for many years later. But the love of her husband helped her to accept God’s love again. A young adult explained the one night he turned away from his morals, the car accident that ensued and how he still prays and walks with Jesus after tragedy. Heads turn, hearts open and lives are changed when someone becomes personal and vulnerable.

Back in the 90’s, when first presented with what our Church believed on sexual morals, especially in marriage, I heard many complaints. I wanted to accept and follow Jesus, but didn’t know if it was possible or if it would bring joy. A few couples boldly embraced these teachings and proclaimed that it was worth every sacrifice. Thankfully, those individuals and the moments I heard their stories are unforgettable.

At the Institute
When Michael and I started teaching Theology of the Body (TOB) through a video program in our home, we loved all the discussion and answering questions. I’m embarrassed that it took me weeks to remember my roots in evangelization – personal witness. We know a ton of young couples who live and love TOB, and some of them have very interesting stories. Thankfully, our friends were open to sharing their journey with the young adults in our living room and we continue this pattern to today – content/teaching, discussion, witnesses (couples and celibates).

Most of the college students and young adults who attend our TOB Intro sessions know little of John Paul II’s teaching. Some know more. But, through the power of the Holy Spirit, it is the testimonies that always solidify the teaching into reality. It is the testimonies that “enflesh” Church teaching.

Carrying the Torch
One of the greatest gifts of the Institute of Catholic Humanism is the presence of the alumni.  Moved by the witnesses who taught them, the now married and ordained young adults want to return to do whatever they can to help the new attendees…bring food, hang out with our children, or give their own testimonies, now 6 years from their first TOB Intro session.

Below are just a few of these amazing people.
*If you’re a campus minister or youth minister considering booking a TOB Intro Weekend at the Institute, send us a message to view a more complete story of the witnesses.
